It seems to me that you have to ask yourself a couple important questions when you decide to start a business….

  • What type of business do I want to build?
  • What kind of client do I want to attract?

Those may seem like rather basic and some how un-inspired questions but don’t let their simplicity fool you.

When I say decide what type of business you want to build I don’t mean, do you want to sell cheese doodles or rubberbands. I mean, what is the purpose of your business?

Look down the road a couple years…what “culture” would you want to have in your business. And yes, culture matters even if you are a one person business.

Because your culture involves your relationship with your clients and your partners you must decide ahead of time how you want to establish and maintain those relationships.

It seems today that there are a lot of marketers just looking for the wham bam quickie and show absolutely no interest or respect in their “list”.

If you are actually interested in building a business, not just a site that generates temporary revenue…but, a real business that provides value and produces income - you must establish a culture.

Both of the questions above are inter-related. Your relationship with your clients is entirely dependent on the type of business you establish. If you are out for the money with no regard for your clients’ needs - you will work a numbers game….

Build your list any way you can and throw offers at them and see what sticks. You can generate a pretty darn good income doing this - there are a lot of marketers proving this.

But for those of you who are more interested in your life and your work having some meaning and providing some value to others - you want a list of like minded clients.

Search out for clients who, like you, are interested in quality and value. By doing this you actually help yourself. Imagine that, do the right thing and it benefits you too!

When you don’t hype or inflate the value of your product you automatically eliminate those who will never invest money in you. The reason is that - the ones who are only out for what they can get from you are looking for the big freebie score.

They won’t be interested in your free resource if you tell them its actual value is $19.00. Offer that same item and tell a group of people it is actually worth $197.00 and they will opt-in every time.

Don’t go for the quick list building strategies if you are serious about your relationship with your clients. Your business will be healthier in the long run.

Maintain the same core concepts as your business grows and you will discover that you can build a very large business with a healthy, happy, large list of clients eager to hear what you have to say and consider the producs and services you offer.

Trust is a wonderful thing!
